TrADItionally,StreptococcihavebeenclassifiedbytheproductionofhemolysisonbloodagarandbytheuseofLancefieldgroupantigens;however,culturehemolysiscanbeimpreciseduetonumberoffactors(operatorexperience,incubationconditionsoftheculture,typesofhemolysinproducedbytheorganism,etc.)andtheLancefieldgroupantigendoesnotcorrelatewiththespecies.Additionally,cultureresultsmaytake2to3dayssuchthatphysicianstreatpatientspresumptivelywhileawaitingcultureresultsorwithholdantibiotictherapyuntilthecausativeorganismisconfirmedwithculture.Fortunately,moleculartaxonomicstudieshaveimprovedclassificationandtimetoresults.
